I don’t know about you, but I really don’t understand the “zombie” craze. It just seems strange to me that grown adults go around dressed like rotted dead people. Even the giant retailer Sears has a whole web page dedicated to zombie fashions. Maybe it’s my age, but the whole thing seems strange to me.
I started thinking about this craze the other day and then I realized that there really are a bunch of dead people walking around. We see them every day. You might even be one of them. I’m not talking about the kind of zombies that we see on the television or movies, I’m talking about everyday humans. The Bible says that we were all at one time dead in our trespasses and sins.(Ephesians 2:1)
The word dead(or death) – means to be separated.
There are two kinds of death: Physical death and Spiritual Death.
- Genesis 2:17 is the first time that the word “die” is mentioned in the Bible. God was talking about Spiritual death. A separation from God.
- Genesis 3:1-7 is when it all happened.
When Adam and Eve sinned, their relationship with God died and they died spiritually.
Look at Romans 5:12. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, we all became sinners. Their sin not only affected their lives, but every child that they would conceive, which became the population of the whole world, which worked it’s way down to us. Because of their sin their relationship with God died.
So, we see that even through a person is alive and breathing, they are still dead. Not physically dead, but spiritually dead. Which is what Ephesians 2:1 is saying. Paul said pretty much the same thing in Colossians 2:13.
Because the world has rejected God, they have developed their own way of living(their walk) that is dominated by sin and is trying constantly to do away with any reference to God.
Look at: 1 John 2:15-17. In the beginning, Satan found a way to get humans to disobey God and it worked. His tactics haven’t changed because they work and there is no need to fix something that works. All sin can be categorized into these three topics:
- The lust of the flesh – the desire to satisfy the needs of the flesh: sex, food, alcohol, drugs, etc.
- The lust of the eyes – The way we look at each other, the way we look at the things we want.
- The pride of life – The desire for money, power, position, possessions and how we taunt others with them.
But that isn’t the way God wants us to live. He wants you live your life the way it was supposed to be lived from the beginning. A life that is in a relationship with Him. (Ephesians 2:4-9). God wants to have a relationship with us, but because of our sin, it wasn’t possible. So, He made a way. He sent His Son, Jesus to pay the price of sin by living the life that we cannot live because of our sin and becoming that perfect sacrifice that the payment of sin demands. He suffered the punishment of our sin by dying on the cross.
The good news(The Gospel) is, that He made it completely free to anyone that would accept the gift of His Son’s sacrifice by believing in Him. Salvation could never come by works or else we would have something to brag about(“Look at what I did!”). But God made a level playing field and only asks that we believe. God’s grace is abundant. The word grace is God giving us that which we don’t deserve. Salvation, Eternal life, Forgiveness of Sin. His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting, it never ends. The word mercy – is God not giving us that which we deserve. Death, eternal Hell. Psalm 118:29 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Our salvation is free to us that believe, but look at what Ephesians 2:10 says. We were created in Christ Jesus for good works. Our salvation isn’t determined by the work that we do, but it is demonstrated by the work that we do. Look at James 2:17-18. James isn’t teaching a works salvation, he is saying that my salvation is demonstrated by my works(our lifestyle or the things we do). We can say we are saved all day long, but if our lifestyle doesn’t match up, our words are useless, they are dead. God wants our walk(our lifestyle) to bring Glory to Him. Look at Galatians 5:18-25. God wants our walk, our lifestyle to be different from the world. But there are a lot of fakes out there that have given the true Christians a bad name. But there is a way to tell if a person is who he says he is. The fruit of a tree is the evidence of the kind of tree that it is. A peach tree will have peaches and you know that it is a peach tree. The same way with Christians. A Christian will live their lives by what the Bible teaches and will produce the “fruit” or evidence of being a Christian.
Look also at Romans 8:1 and then at 2 Corinthians 6:16-17 – 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
We were dead in trespasses and sins. Our relationship with God was dead. But thanks to the saving grace of Jesus, we are made alive. We can live the life we were meant to live. A life that glorifies God in everything we do. With a life like that why would we want to go back into the dark, into the lifestyle that clearly wants to destroy us?
